Berlin's jazz calendar is ridiculously stacked this week. From vibraphone wizard Patricia Brennan making her Berlin debut with Dan Weiss to Gunter Hampel (yes, that Gunter Hampel) still doing his thing at 87, there's something for everyone who knows their bebop from their free improv. Here's what actually matters:

Weiss brings his tabla-informed polyrhythmic madness with a ridiculous lineup: Patricia Brennan fresh off her DownBeat Vibraphonist of the Year win, Peter Evans doing his trumpet-as-electronics thing, and Miles Okazaki who recorded every single Monk composition. This is the kind of show where the musicians are having more fun than you figuring out what meter they're in.

Piano burner Mike LeDonne (who's played with literally everyone from Dizzy to Sonny Rollins) teams up with Vienna drummer Joris Dudli and three young guns from NYC and Vienna. Intergenerational hang vibes, probably some serious bebop, definitely some Hammond B3 action if we're lucky.

Vibraphone legend Gunter Hampel (87!) with his quartet plus dancers. If you're into the European free jazz lineage and haven't caught Hampel live, this is basically required viewing. The man was working with Marion Brown in the 60s.

German guitarist Linus Eppinger and Dutch alto beast Benjamin Herman doing the hard bop thing with Hammond organ. If you miss Blue Note's 60s sound, this is your night. Donaldson just passed last year, making this feel extra timely.

UK pianist Neil Cowley brings his post-Esbjörn Svensson vibes. Think melodic trio jazz that actually rocks, not the sleepy coffee shop variety. His "Spacebound Apes" from a few years back is still in rotation.

If you need a break from all the cerebral free jazz, here's your antidote. Cuban son meets European jazz arrangements with singer Mayelis Guyat from the Oriente region where this music started 100 years ago. Dance-friendly but with enough harmonic sophistication to keep it interesting.

Norwegian violinist Tuva Halse on her German tour with Oscar Andreas Haug on trumpet. Nordic jazz keeps delivering, and this quintet sits somewhere between chamber music precision and improvised risk-taking.

Septet led by Mark Pringle on keys/synths with Camila Nebbia (whose tenor work with Jeremiah Cymerman is essential) and Julia Biłat on cello. Bigger ensemble writing that leans into texture and timbre over pure blowing.

Isabel Anders on piano with Alexander Frangenheim (bass) and Greg Smith (drums). Free improv trio exploring the space between composition and spontaneity. Entry by donation, intimate setting.

Soul-jazz vibes with David Haynes and special guests Ania Szarmach & Will Jacobs. When you need something groovier after all that avant-garde, A-Trane delivers.
