Philosopher and journalist Carolin Emcke presents her eagerly anticipated new book exploring the foundations of human value and radical humanism. Drawing from two decades reporting in conflict zones across Israel-Palestine and beyond, Emcke examines the limits of empathy in contemporary discourse and challenges us to think critically about who we recognize as human, and why.

The book delves into the philosophical blind spots that shape our moral obligations to others, asking fundamental questions about the boundaries of our responsibility toward those we encounter. With her characteristic intellectual rigor and lived experience from reporting in global crisis zones, Emcke offers new perspectives on belonging, recognition, and what it means to affirm the dignity of every person.

This 90-minute reading features moderation by Hanno Hauenstein, offering an intimate evening with one of Germany's most respected contemporary thinkers. Emcke, a trained philosopher who studied in London, Frankfurt, and Harvard, currently moderates Berlin's "Streitraum" discussion series at the Schaubühne and received the prestigious German Book Trade Peace Prize in 2016.
