Underscores — the project of April Harper Grey — has always charted her own course. Between hyper-pop, raw emotionality, and radical genre freedom, the US-American artist has created her own unique cosmos and an international fanbase in no time.
Music entered Grey's life early: at just 13 years old, she released her first Dubstep tracks on SoundCloud, inspired by acts like Skrillex and the emerging online producer scene. What started as a hobby in her childhood bedroom quickly evolved. Through early EPs like "Air Freshener" (2016), "Skin Purifying Treatment" (2018), "We Never Got Strawberry Cake" (2019), and "Character Development" (2020), she experimented across genres from hyper-pop to indie, rock, and emo.
2021 brought the breakthrough. Debut album "Fishmonger" was heralded by major publications as one of the most important hyper-pop works of the year, gaining her worldwide attention and notable support slots with 100 gecs. But underscores has never fit into boxes — the second album "Wallsocket" (2023) broke completely from its predecessor, a concept album about three young girls growing up in a fictional Michigan town, exploring gun violence, commercialization, religion, and Grey's identity as a trans woman.
After festival appearances at Lollapalooza and two sold-out headlining tours, she released "U" in early 2026. After the complex storytelling of "Wallsocket," Grey refocuses on sounds, with Vogue describing it as "one of the best and bravest pop albums of the year."
Live, underscores creates something entirely different — more than concerts, these are multimedia experiences blending club culture, film, and community. Pop in its most thrilling form: energetic sets, thoughtful aesthetics, and an honesty with audiences rarely experienced.
