About the event
An evening exploring sound, vision, and cultural memory through two landmark experimental films.
The Case of the Three Sided Dream (2014) by Adam Kahan presents a prismatic meditation on the avant-garde musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk, whose virtuosic approach to the saxophone—and to sound itself—defied conventional boundaries. Kirk's legacy as an innovator and bandleader comes alive through archival footage, interviews, and Kahan's own poetic framing.
And... We've Got Sabor (1967) by Sara Gómez captures the pulsing energy of New York's Latin jazz scene at a pivotal moment, blending documentary and cinematic poetry. Gómez's film is a celebration of rhythm, community, and artistic resilience—a time capsule of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican musical traditions in conversation with the avant-garde.
Together, these films offer a window into how experimental music and cultural expression shaped American modernism, and how voices like Kirk's and Gómez's own continued to push the boundaries of what cinema and sound could become. Screening at Laden 2.
