About the event
Julian Lage, one of the most celebrated and versatile guitarists of his generation, brings his quartet to Berlin for a special performance. Alongside John Medeski on keys, Jorge Roeder on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums, Lage presents material from his latest album "Scenes from Above."
Unlike his previous album "Speak to Me," where Lage led a larger ensemble, this new record features him as an equal band member in an intimate quartet setting. The nine tracks showcase a transparent, organic sound born from genuine musical conversation — no overpowering solos, just four musicians speaking with and for each other, exploring songs in real time.
Lage's exceptional gifts shine throughout: a sonic architect who moves effortlessly across jazz, pop, country, bluegrass, folk, and rock traditions. Acoustic and electric guitars blend with subtle melodies and complex textures, ranging from delicate and atmospheric to pulsing and playful to emotionally wide-open.
Already an internationally celebrated virtuoso despite being under 40, Lage brings three decades of performance experience, having collaborated with Gary Burton, John Zorn, Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge, and Fred Hersch. His rare combination of harmonic vocabulary, technical mastery, and spontaneous improvisational ability makes each performance feel like an intimate jam session.
