Playwright Georgia Bruce brings a radical contemporary reading to Kafka's fragmented novel The Castle, weaving in Albert Camus' philosophy of the absurd. This production centers a trans man navigating the Sisyphean task of seeking acceptance in a world that questions his very existence—a bureaucratic labyrinth where permission is endlessly deferred and belonging remains perpetually out of reach.
When K., a land surveyor, arrives at a castle village seeking residency, he discovers an impenetrable system of gatekeeping and absurd regulations. The more desperately he pursues validation, the further he drifts from his goal. Directors Jules Head and choreographer Wibke Storkan explore this struggle through a trans lens, asking urgent contemporary questions: What does it mean to be perpetually incomplete in a society obsessed with completion? Can we find freedom not in reaching the summit, but in finding peace within the struggle itself?
With an ensemble cast including Ujesh Buchele, Nina Bruns, and Lukas von Horbatschewsky, supported by original music from Tom Foskett-Barnes and a gymnasium-inspired set by Janina Kuhlmann, The Castle is a fearless 100-minute examination of belonging, bureaucratic absurdity, and the radical act of imagining joy in impossible circumstances. Part of the Berliner Ensemble's WORX experimental program.
No intermission.
