Noah Haidle's contemporary drama, translated to German and directed by Anna Bergmann, traces the complicated terrain of grief and healing through the eyes of Hope Foster, a successful real estate agent who sells people homes and security. Years ago, a moment of carelessness during play cost her everything — the loss of her child. That weight never leaves her.
At a house viewing, Hope meets Margaret and Will, a young couple whose lives would soon diverge. Margaret becomes her friend, someone to confide in as circumstances shift. Shortly after, she encounters Will's father, a retired Latin teacher carrying his own burden of loss. In him, Hope finds recognition and solace.
Others join their orbit: Jerry, a security consultant, and Donna, a neighbour. Each carries the marks of a life battered by circumstance. Together, they form a kind of community of fate — damaged people who find something resembling home in each other's presence.
At its heart, the production asks profound questions: Can hope survive our greatest crises? Is there a life after shipwreck? And does genuine human comfort have the power to heal wounds?
Featuring Corinna Harfouch, Alexander Khuon, Lenz Moretti, Wiebke Mollenhauer, Abak Safaei-Rad, and Frieder Langenberger. Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes (no intermission). Content note: The play contains depictions of child death and emotional distress.
