Present Time Composition (PTC©) is a unique methodology for creating music, dance, theater, and other performing arts through compositorially guided solo and group improvisation. Developed by Alan Bern in 2005 and refined through workshops at conservatories, music institutes, and festivals across Europe and North America, PTC© offers performers a structured yet intuitive approach to artistic creation.
The workshop begins with exercises that train awareness of the constant flow of impulses active within each person—a process similar to meditation, but with focus directed toward the content of involuntary impulses so we can respond to them consciously. Once this foundational skill develops, participants layer higher levels of information drawn from compositional, choreographic, or theatrical thinking, transforming simple impulses into complex artistic material.
The two-day intensive covers impulse awareness, constellations (interpersonal dimensions of impulses and actions), continuous duos (adding compositional thinking to improvisation), and coached performance (incorporating real-time coaching feedback into improvisation).
Open to both instrumental and vocal musicians, regardless of genre (jazz, classical, etc.). No improvisation experience required—but participants must have solid technical command of their instrument. Most importantly: bring an open mind, receptive ears, and curiosity about the deep connection between inner consciousness and outer musical sound.
Instructor: Alan Bern
Location: exploratorium berlin, Studio 2
