The Berlin Concert Hall Orchestra, one of Germany's most distinguished ensembles, brings Hans Werner Henze's monumental Symphony No. 9 to Switzerland's premier concert venue. Under the baton of Joana Mallwitz, and joined by the Berlin Radio Choir, this performance continues the orchestra's tour celebrating Henze's centennial year. Written as a response to Nazi Germany's atrocities and a plea for peace, this 75-minute symphony without intermission is one of the 20th century's most important statements against war and fascism. Henze (1926–2012) was a humanist and political artist whose music carries both technical mastery and emotional urgency. This guest performance at Lucerne Festival follows the orchestra's appearances at Berlin's Philharmonie and Konzerthaus, bringing one of Europe's great orchestras to an international stage.
