A compelling theatrical adaptation of Ken Krimstein's acclaimed graphic novel about the life of Hannah Arendt, the 20th-century philosopher who fundamentally shaped political thought. Directed by Theresa Thomasberger, this production traces Arendt's intellectual journey from Königsberg through Berlin, Paris, and finally New York, exploring her encounters with totalitarianism, freedom, and the act of thinking itself.
The ensemble cast brings to life the multiple chapters of Arendt's remarkable existence, from her formative years studying with Heidegger and Jaspers to her controversial analysis of the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. Her most influential work, The Origins of Totalitarianism, fundamentally altered how we understand power, freedom, and the dangers of unchecked bureaucracy. Thomasberger's staging transforms Krimstein's hundreds of sketches into a thought-provoking journey through one of history's most courageous minds.
At the heart of this production lies Arendt's insistence on "thinking without a handrail," her belief that true freedom means the courage to think independently, even when it leads to difficult truths. The play captures both the humanity of this great thinker and the urgency of her ideas for our time. A 7 PM introduction in the foyer precedes the performance.
Suitable for ages 16+. Duration: 2 hours, no intermission.
