Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957) is celebrated as one of the 20th century's most significant sculptors. After starting with traditional academic training, he pioneered a distinctive style in Paris from 1907, marked by organic forms reduced to their essence. His continuous artistic pursuit is evident in the variations of central motifs and his innovative use of materials, surfaces, pedestals, light, movement, photography, and film to stage his sculptures.
In collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Neue Nationalgalerie is hosting the first major exhibition of Brancusi's work in Germany in over 50 years. This extensive survey features more than 150 sculptures, photographs, drawings, films, and rare archival materials from the Centre Pompidou and other international collections. Key works such as “The Kiss”, “Bird in Space”, “Sleeping Muse”, and “Endless Column” are included, alongside a partial reconstruction of Brancusi’s legendary studio, shown outside Paris for the first time since its bequest to the French state in 1957.
While Brancusi’s work is highly regarded in France, he remains relatively unknown to the broader German public. This exhibition aims to highlight his importance and give him the recognition he deserves.
This exhibition is made possible by Freunde der Nationalgalerie.
A special exhibition by the Neue Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou.
