An extraordinary exploration of rhythm across cultural and temporal boundaries, featuring tap dancer Anna Lublina, vocalist Gry Tingskog, sound artist Sam Hatchwell, and performer Yasmeen Al-Qaisi. This interdisciplinary performance investigates the concept of "diasporic Jewish rhythm and its embodiment" through a lens that connects shared histories spanning Morocco, Bosnia, Uzbekistan, Andalusia, Yemen, Romania, and Palestine.
Blending tap dance with extended vocal techniques and live mixing, the artists examine how rhythms have been transformed—and sometimes distorted—by colonial projects, imperial expansion, and nationalist movements. At its heart lies a compelling question: can ancestral rhythms truly be preserved as cultural artifacts, or do they naturally transcend boundaries, flowing across communities like water finding new channels?
The performance challenges conventional thinking about cultural ownership and musical tradition, suggesting instead that rhythm itself is a shared human language. Each artist brings technical precision alongside deep cultural knowledge, creating a work that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply moving.
Presented at ausland's intimate basement venue, this is an evening for those interested in experimental performance, diaspora studies, and the politics of music itself. The performance occurs Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3.
