About the event
🎨 100th Anniversary of Lovis Corinth's Death
This focused exhibition examines the fate of works by Lovis Corinth and his wife, painter Charlotte Berend-Corinth, in the Nationalgalerie collection. The exhibition centers on the diverse provenances of the paintings, supplementing the gallery's holdings with reproductions of works that ended up in other museums due to the Nazi "Degenerate Art" campaign.
📜 Complex Histories
Many paintings were confiscated as "degenerate" in 1937, but surprisingly returned in 1939. Others were only reacquired much later, while some remain abroad today. To fill these gaps, additional works by both Corinth and Charlotte Berend-Corinth were acquired after 1945 in both West and East Germany.
🖼️ The Artist
Lovis Corinth (1858-1925), alongside Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt, is considered one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. After a stroke in 1911, his brushwork became distinctly more expressive.
