George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece arrives at the Berliner Ensemble in Luk Perceval's haunting theatrical adaptation. This production traces the psychological collapse of Winston Smith under conditions of ubiquitous distrust, propagandist insanity, and physical pain in a totalitarian state. Four actors virtuously embody different facets of Winston's fractured consciousness, while the director interrogates fundamental questions about power, control, and the human capacity for resistance.
Designer Philip Bußmann's minimalist stage—primarily mirrors and geometric forms—amplifies the claustrophobic atmosphere and multiplies the surveillance presence throughout. The production employs sophisticated theatrical language: precise ensemble movement, carefully orchestrated speech patterns, subtle choreography, and strategic lighting to create psychological depth with remarkable economy. Features a new German translation by Frank Heibert.
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes with one intermission.
