🎵 In a 1994 edition of Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations, celebrated educator, author, theorist, and activist bell hooks wrote: "The function of art is more than to simply represent things as they are – it is to imagine what is possible." Her words speak to a deep wonder, a sense that truth is often stranger than any fiction.
While hooks writes down the meaning of art, French-Senegalese artist anaiis (whose name – in lowercase – is a homage to hooks) translates this ethos into sound.
On her upcoming album Devotion & The Black Divine, the songs swell with emotional clarity and a growing sense of homecoming. Not to a place, but to the self. anaiis seems to enter into a dialogue with reverence for nature, our own divinity, and thus our wholeness – amidst chaos as well as beauty.
