Many Shades of Grès

About the event

Discover the exquisite world of French fashion designer Madame Grès (1903–1993), a true pioneer of 20th-century haute couture. This groundbreaking exhibition, a collaboration between the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin (Museum of Decorative Arts) and the School of Culture and Design at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (University of Applied Sciences), marks the first time Madame Grès's work is showcased for a German-speaking audience.

Madame Grès earned renown in the 1930s for her iconic floor-length, pleated gowns, drawing inspiration from ancient sculptures. Her remarkable success spanned decades, continuing through the 1960s. In 1976, while serving as president of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, she was awarded the prestigious Prix Dé d’Or, the organization's highest honor. Her fashion house's prominence waned in the 1980s, eventually leading to its sale.

Grès’s designs consistently reflect a profound engagement with art and culture. The Kunstgewerbemuseum proudly holds a collection of 24 outfits by Grès, primarily from the 1960s to the 1980s, offering a unique glimpse into her artistic evolution.

This special exhibition is a joint presentation of the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the School of Culture and Design at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin.
