About the event

🎨 100 Years After the First Surrealist Manifesto

This exhibition offers new insights into the extensive networks of this international 20th-century art movement. Through paintings and sculptures by artists including Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, René Magritte, Joan Miró, and Dorothea Tanning, the show presents the results of a multi-year provenance research project on the Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch Collection.

🌍 Complex Journeys
The exhibition traces in three sections the eventful paths of these artworks - from Paris through Brussels and other European cities, through the years of National Socialism and World War II, to exile in Mexico and the United States. Many artists, along with collectors and dealers, were forced to flee France after 1940. Some were able to take their works with them, others had to leave them behind.

🔗 Networks of Relationships
The Surrealist circle was shaped by complex relationships where friendships, love affairs, and business connections frequently overlapped. The occupation of France by the Germans from 1940 forced numerous artists and dealers to flee - revealing how both historical circumstances and personal networks contributed to the spread of this international movement.
