Two inseparable sixteen-year-olds, Paula and La Maestra, spend the summer training hard to represent Mexico in the Junior Pan-American Swimming Championships. Their friendship, marked by nighttime confessions, shared laughter, and the unique intimacy of teenage girl friendship, seems unbreakable. Everything changes after a New Year's Eve party. Since an encounter with a boy Paula liked, she becomes withdrawn and distant. La Maestra gently insists until her friend begins to piece together a traumatic event she can barely articulate. Director Fernanda Tovar examines the complexity of justice in a post-#MeToo era with nuance and empathy, without judgment or moralizing. Set in a world shaped by social media, Chicas Tristes responds with sensitivity to the urgent reality of patriarchal violence.
