Whether it was during his time at Eton College or as an imperial policeman of the colonial powers in Burma, whether he washed dishes, worked as a journalist or fought Franco's regime in Spain – throughout his life, George Orwell had a fine sense of authoritarian behaviour and rejected it in all its forms. 1984 is a satirical exaggeration and at the same time a truthful account of a world where the desire for power of a few has prevailed and become structurally consolidated.
An adaptation by Luk Perceval with new German translation by Frank Heibert, this striking theatrical production traces the psychological collapse of Winston Smith under totalitarian control. The minimalist design by Philip Bußmann uses mirrors and geometric forms to amplify the claustrophobic surveillance atmosphere throughout the performance.
